Motherwell College has become the first and only state-funded education establishment in Scotland to be authorised to deliver the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma course.

The IB Diploma is an internationally recognised 2 year pre-university programme for young people usually between the ages of sixteen and nineteen.  It is a unique programme which, as well as traditional academic studies, allows the students to learn about other cultures and environments as well as their own.  It promotes a variety of ways of learning and offers the opportunity for widening personal experiences.

The IB Diploma is recognised by universities in 124 countries and IB graduates have a very successful reputation when it comes to being admitted to some of the best universities in the world.

Now students at Motherwell College will not only be able to benefit from studying the IB Diploma course, but they will do so in the brand new 21st century £70 million Ravenscraig campus the College moves to this summer.

Hugh Logan, Principal and Chief Executive of Motherwell College said:  "This is a real coup for us and underlines the quality of education provided at Motherwell College.  It's also a first in Scotland for state-funded education establishments and a great start to what is a very exciting year."

Background

The IB organisation was founded in 1968.  It is based in Geneva and has offices all over the world.  It promotes skills in young people that will help them understand more about themselves, other cultures and continents to help create a better and more peaceful world.

The 2 year course covers languages, the arts, individuals and societies, mathematics and computer science and experimental sciences.  Students also get to develop personal skills by helping in communities, working with people less fortunate or on international projects.

Most students will be eligible to apply for a Bursary or EMA.  This covers tuition fees and, for those who qualify, an additional sum for travel and living costs.  The course can be offered on a residential basis.  Fees per year are £6,500 (excluding accommodation).
